Zaporizhzhia NPP without power for 6 days: threat of a radiation disaster
According to glavcom.ua: The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been disconnected from the Ukrainian energy system for six days due to the occupation by Russian invaders. In the absence of external power, the safety of the plant is ensured by backup diesel generators. This was stated by the head of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate Oleg Korikov.
According to Korikov, this poses a threat to nuclear and radiation safety. He emphasized that the lack of electricity supply could have very serious consequences and called on the occupiers to create conditions for restoring the connection of the plant to the energy system. Otherwise, if the diesel fuel runs out, an accident may occur, which would have consequences not only for Ukraine but also for European countries.
As the official stated, there is no guarantee that the diesel fuel reserves at the site are sufficient for a longer period, so this could lead to serious problems with the safety systems of the plant. Time will tell how long they will last to ensure normal operation.
Overall, the situation with the disconnection of the Zaporizhzhia NPP from the energy system is a serious threat to Ukrainian and European security and requires immediate measures to address the problem.
