Ukrainians in the Russian army: a death sentence or an opportunity to desert?

According to Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, more than 1400 citizens from 36 African countries are part of the Russian army. He noted that the Russian side recruits them through various methods, offering money or deceiving them, and also sends the majority to so-called 'meat assaults', where they quickly perish.

The Russian command understands that there will be no consequences for the killed foreigner, so they are treated as expendable human material. Most mercenaries do not live longer than a month

Sybiha urged the governments of African states to publicly warn their citizens against joining the Russian army, and emphasized that prisoners of war are entitled to all standards of international humanitarian law.

Foreign mercenaries: how to fight for one's own life

As Sybiha noted, one can avoid the fate of a foreign mercenary in the Russian army by not signing contracts with the Russian authorities and avoiding conscription. He also called for seeking opportunities to desert and surrender if sent to the front line.

Most foreign mercenaries who found themselves in captivity saved their lives by surrendering on the first day of the fighting

Russia is actively recruiting foreign mercenaries in the war against Ukraine, while the Ukrainian government calls for avoiding participation in this conflict and provides prisoners of war with a 'ticket to life'.

Following the publicity regarding the presence of foreign mercenaries in the Russian army, the authorities of Ukraine and foreign ministries of African countries are publicly urging their citizens to avoid service in the Russian army and provide advice on how to survive and protect their lives in case of military conflict.
