Russia's Ballistic Missile Barrage on Ukraine Hits New Peak in January 2026
Missile Assaults in January 2026
According to Главком: Russian forces launched a record number of ballistic missiles against Ukraine in January 2026. A total of 91 ballistic missiles were fired over the course of the month, surpassing the previous high of 89 missiles recorded in October 2025. This marks the highest monthly tally since the full-scale invasion began. The sustained use of such high-precision, difficult-to-intercept weapons represents a significant escalation in Russia's campaign to degrade Ukrainian infrastructure and morale.
Attack Details
The attacks were distributed throughout the month: 18 ballistic missiles were used in the first week, with one intercepted. The second week saw a surge to 38 missiles, including types like the 9M723, KN-23, and 5V55, of which 11 were destroyed. During the third week, 23 ballistic missiles were launched, with 14 shot down. In the final week, 12 missiles were used, and 5 were eliminated.
In addition to the ballistic missiles, Russia also deployed:
- over 6,000 attack drones,
- approximately 5,500 guided aerial bombs (GABs),
- 158 missiles of various other types.
Particularly intense strikes occurred on the night of January 20, involving 15 Kh-101 missiles (13 destroyed), and on the night of January 9, with 22 Kalibr missiles launched (10 destroyed). Russia demonstrated the breadth of its arsenal in an attack on the night of January 24; debris analysis revealed newly manufactured missiles from early 2026, as well as novel experimental models. This suggests ongoing efforts to adapt and expand Russia's long-range strike capabilities despite international sanctions.
This data confirms the increasing intensity of Russia's military actions, causing deep concern in Ukraine and among its international partners. The escalation in missile attacks during January 2026 underscores a dangerous shift in Russia's tactics, with serious potential implications for regional security. These actions have alarmed not only Ukraine but also its allies, who are closely monitoring the situation. Faced with this growing threat, Ukraine must continue to strengthen its defensive capabilities and seek sustained support from partners to counter the aggression.
