Commemorating the Life of the Great Martyr Saint Irene

According to Главком: On May 5, the Orthodox Church remembers Saint Irene the Great Martyr, who lived in the 1st century. She was the daughter of Licinius, a pagan ruler in Macedonia. Educated by the Christian teacher Apelian, she secretly received baptism. Because of her faith, Irene endured torture, but her courage led not only to her own salvation but also inspired many others to embrace Christianity. Through her efforts, over 10,000 pagans converted to the Christian faith.

It is known that Irene’s father, Licinius, ordered her to be thrown under the hooves of wild horses. However, through prayer, Irene healed her father-a pivotal event for her family. After this miracle, her father and three thousand other people came to believe in Christ. Irene passed away peacefully in a cave near the city of Ephesus, and her body was later never found.

Traditions and Omens of the Feast

In the folk calendar, this day is known as Irene the Seedling Planter, because May 5 traditionally marks the start of planting cabbage in gardens. Various beliefs and omens are associated with this day:

  • If seedlings absorb a lot of water, it promises a dry hay harvest in June.
  • If birds stop singing, expect a prolonged downpour.
  • If the sky is overcast on Irene’s day and clouds move quickly, the weather may worsen for several days.
  • The first thunder on this day foretells a rich grain harvest.

This day was considered especially favorable for women involved in gardening and household work. An essential tradition was planting vegetables early in the morning, while no one was watching, as it was believed to protect the future harvest from the 'evil eye.'

Honoring Saint Irene underscores her crucial role in spreading Christianity during the 1st century, while also reflecting traditions preserved in Ukrainian culture. Irene the Seedling Planter’s day is not only tied to religious rituals but also to agricultural practices, a vital part of Ukrainian life. This highlights the deep intertwining of faith and everyday tasks, particularly in farming, which continues to shape people’s worldview and activities to this day.

As we honor Saint Irene on May 5, it is also important to reflect on other significant observances in the Orthodox calendar, such as the traditions and prayers associated with Saint Januarius on April 21. Understanding these celebrations provides deeper insights into the rich tapestry of Christian history and the various saints who have shaped the faith.
