Slovakia Rises as One of NATO’s Top Ammunition Producers
Slovakia’s Ammunition Manufacturing Boom
According to Главком: Slovak President Peter Pellegrini has announced that the country has transformed into one of the largest ammunition manufacturers within NATO, even as commercial arms shipments to Ukraine keep climbing. The nation is pouring significant investment into its defense industrial base, which now accounts for nearly 3% of its gross domestic product (GDP). In 2024, Slovakia’s weapon exports hit €1.15 billion-double the previous year’s figure and nearly ten times the pre-war level.
Since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, Slovakia has ramped up artillery shell production by 15 times. The country is also pushing ahead with the development of interceptor drones, working alongside local aircraft repair facilities. According to Pellegrini,
“Bratislava is already supplying Ukraine with millions of shells, while simultaneously investing in its own defense industry, which now makes up almost 3% of GDP.”
Support for Ukraine and Defense Spending
Slovakia continues to back Ukraine through fresh aid packages that include demining equipment, engineering tools, and industrial cooperation. Notably, the country has counted the construction of two civilian hospitals as part of its defense expenditures. Former Slovak ambassador to NATO Tomáš Valášek pointed out that
“without these facilities, Bratislava would have stopped at 1.74% of GDP-not the declared 2%.”
The officially reported defense spending reached 2% of GDP, meeting NATO’s target set 12 years ago. However, Bratislava’s official explanation states that the hospitals contain secret defense-related infrastructure and will serve a strategic role during wartime or emergencies. Meanwhile, some nations, as Spanish officials have noted, believe that NATO’s 5% commitment is meaningless because it remains a political agreement without legal force.
Slovakia remains a critical defense hub for the Ukrainian military, and its efforts to strengthen its own defensive capabilities underscore the country’s commitment to active participation in international security initiatives.
The expansion of Slovakia’s defense capacity and its robust support for Ukraine highlight a strategic shift in response to regional security challenges. Investments in the military-industrial complex not only bolster national defense but also help stabilize the situation in Ukraine-a key factor for European security at large. In this way, Slovakia is taking a proactive stance amid the evolving geopolitical landscape, particularly within the NATO framework.
As Slovakia enhances its defense capabilities, it is also redefining its approach to defense spending. This shift includes the counting of hospitals and cybersecurity investments as part of its military expenditures.
