Kazakh National Detained in Berlin on Suspicion of Espionage for Russia
Suspect Arrested in German Capital Over Alleged Russian Intelligence Links
According to Главком: German authorities have arrested a Kazakh citizen in Berlin, accusing him of spying for Russian intelligence services. Investigators allege that the suspect, identified as Sergey K., had been in contact with a Russian intelligence agency since at least May 2025. He is accused of passing on details about Germany’s military assistance to Ukraine, as well as sensitive information concerning the country’s arms and defense industry-including firms involved in the development of drones and robotics.
Alleged Activities and Surveillance Operations
According to the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, Sergey K. conducted visual reconnaissance and prepared for acts of sabotage. He reportedly photographed public buildings in Berlin and military convoys on highways, including those belonging to a NATO member state. The prosecutor’s office stated,
“Sergey K. repeatedly sent photographs of public buildings in Berlin or military convoys on highways, including a convoy from a NATO country.”
In addition, he is said to have informed his contact within the intelligence service about potential targets for sabotage in Germany and offered to recruit others for a sabotage and espionage cell. His activities reportedly involved gathering intelligence on:
- Germany’s military support for Ukraine;
- the German arms and defense industry;
- companies specializing in drone and robot development.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before an investigative judge at the Federal Court of Justice on April 29, 2026. This arrest follows a similar case in Germany, where a Ukrainian national named Vitaliy M. was taken into custody on March 27, 2026, also on suspicion of espionage for Russia. He is accused of monitoring a member of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on behalf of Russian intelligence.
These incidents highlight the growing threat of espionage and sabotage across Europe, particularly amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and the international support it receives. The detention of Sergey K. and the nature of his alleged actions suggest that Russian intelligence services remain actively engaged in reconnaissance and subversive operations targeting Western nations backing Ukraine. The case also underscores the critical need for international cooperation to counter such threats, which can have serious implications for regional security.
The recent arrest of Sergey K. in Berlin highlights a troubling trend in espionage activities linked to Russia. This incident comes on the heels of another significant case involving a Ukrainian national detained for similar charges.
