Amid Syria Withdrawal, U.S. Plans New 5,000-Troop Base in Gaza
U.S. Military Base Planned for Gaza Strip
According to Главком: As the U.S. withdraws over a thousand troops from Syria, the Trump administration is developing plans to construct a new military base in the Gaza Strip capable of housing 5,000 personnel. This strategic move appears to signal a shift in U.S. military posture in the Middle East. The proposed forward operating base would include:
- 26 armored observation towers
- A firing range
- A storage facility for military equipment
The entire facility is to be encircled by razor wire and will feature a network of bunkers equipped with advanced ventilation systems.
Troop Drawdown and Regional Implications
The base is slated for construction on an arid plain in southern Gaza. A select group of international construction firms has already been shown the proposed site. Concurrently, the U.S. is accelerating its military withdrawal from Syria, with all remaining American forces expected to depart the country within the next two months. In early February, U.S. troops vacated the Al-Tanf outpost near the borders of Syria, Jordan, and Iraq, as well as the Al-Shaddadi base in northeastern Syria. Both installations were handed over to government-controlled forces.
This dual strategy of reducing the U.S. footprint in Syria while establishing a significant new base in Gaza may reflect an adjustment to evolving political and security dynamics in the region. Analysts suggest it could be an attempt to consolidate U.S. influence in a volatile area, though such a move risks heightening tensions with local populations and neighboring states, potentially leading to further regional instability.
