The USA and Russia voted against the UN resolution on Chernobyl: who else was among the 7 countries
UN General Assembly Resolution
According to ХВИЛЯ: The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution aimed at mitigating the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster. This initiative was prepared by Ukraine and supported by 97 states. However, the voting turned out to be controversial: the USA voted against the resolution, alongside Russia, Belarus, China, North Korea, Nicaragua, and Niger. It is also worth noting that 39 states abstained during the voting.
Situation in International Relations
In the context of international relations, U.S. President Donald Trump proposed the idea of partially withdrawing troops from the Donbas. Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, stated his readiness for compromise regarding NATO membership, but also emphasized that:
“I am not ready to make such concessions.” - Volodymyr Zelensky
This indicates the complexity of the situation and the necessity for clear security guarantees for Ukraine.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius noted the absence of President Vladimir Putin's willingness to negotiate. A planned online meeting between EU foreign ministers and the U.S. delegation did not take place, which also confirms the complexity of international negotiations. Leaders of the 'eastern flank' of Europe will meet in Helsinki, while the EU leaders' summit will take place in Brussels on Thursday.
This situation underscores the tension in relations between countries and the need for further diplomacy to resolve conflicts. The importance of international support for Ukraine, especially in the context of the Chernobyl disaster, remains relevant, as it can impact the security not only of Ukraine but of the entire region. Given the complexity of the negotiation process, further actions by world leaders will play a decisive role in stabilizing the situation in Ukraine and around it.
