Washington Gives Green Light to Kyiv’s Request

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the United States has, for the first time, responded favorably to Kyiv’s request for licenses to jointly manufacture air defense systems and their missiles. In the past, Washington only offered vague replies to such inquiries. This breakthrough came during bilateral talks with Donald Trump and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who confirmed the American side’s readiness to resolve the matter for Ukraine.

Missile Production Prospects in Ukraine

U.S. production capacity in this area is limited, topping out at 700 missiles per year. Meanwhile, licenses for joint manufacturing have already been granted to Germany, which has launched its own production lines. Kyiv, for its part, has signed a contract with Berlin to supply 600 missiles. As Zelenskyy noted,

“This time it became quite public, so there are no secrets here: the American team responded positively to the licenses for the first time”

(Volodymyr Zelenskyy).

The next step for Ukraine is to start missile production, which requires a license from the United States. President Zelenskyy also emphasized that

“everyone agrees that, apart from the Germans, we in Europe have all the technical capabilities to begin producing missiles for Patriot systems”

(Volodymyr Zelenskyy). Given the critical need to expand production, obtaining the license is a key milestone for Ukraine.

This positive U.S. response on licenses for joint production of air defense systems and missiles could significantly bolster Ukraine’s defensive capabilities, especially amid ongoing regional tensions. It also reflects a deepening of cooperation between Kyiv and Washington, potentially opening new avenues for military-technical collaboration in the future.

As Ukraine moves forward with its plans for missile production, the recent positive signals from international allies further strengthen its position. Notably, Zelenskyy's optimistic reception of support from G7 and Trump regarding missile licenses illustrates a growing consensus among key partners, paving the way for enhanced military collaboration and production capabilities.
