A 250-Year Time Capsule Buried by the United States
America's Time Capsule Entombment
According to Главком: On July 4, 2026, in Philadelphia, the America's Time Capsule was buried. In accordance with a 2016 act of the U.S. Congress, it is scheduled to remain sealed for 250 years, until July 4, 2276. The burial took place at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, witnessed by a large crowd. A live broadcast of the ceremony began at 8:30 AM local time.
The 2016 law established the America250 commission, which oversaw this landmark event. The capsule is made of steel and weighs roughly 900 pounds (nearly 408 kg). It has an elongated cylindrical shape with a bell-shaped lid. Engineers from NIST, who fabricated the capsule, worked on the project in the state of Maryland. All 50 states, the District of Columbia, five U.S. territories, and the three branches of the federal government contributed to its creation.
Artifacts Inside the Capsule
Inside the capsule are a variety of artifacts representing the nation's cultural heritage. Among the items are:
- a pocket-sized copy of the U.S. Constitution signed by Supreme Court justices
- an iPhone 17 Pro Max smartphone in Cosmic Orange color
- a bottle of Coca-Cola accompanied by sheet music for the song 'I'd Like to Buy America a Coke'
- a pennant from the 2026 Rose Parade
- a piece of fabric from the Wright brothers' aircraft
- a bone from a North Atlantic right whale
- a bald eagle feather that served during the Civil War
- a gold Olympic medal
As planned, the capsule will be unearthed on July 4, 2276, an event that will be significant for future generations. Rosie Rios remarked,
“When the capsule is opened in 2276, future generations will see the care, pride, and optimism with which Americans celebrated our 250th anniversary.”
It is worth noting that this is not the first capsule buried for a milestone anniversary of Independence. The official bicentennial capsule is stored at the National Archives, with its opening scheduled for 2076. Additionally, in 1976, President Gerald Ford opened the Century Safe, which had been sealed in 1876.
This ceremony was a significant event in U.S. history, highlighting the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations. The burial of the time capsule symbolizes not only a remembrance of the past but also hope for the future, demonstrating how vital it is to safeguard cultural values for those who come after us. Such events help underscore the nation's shared achievements and identity, encouraging young people to reflect on their place in the country's history and legacy.
