The 'Steel Front' Initiative

According to Главком: Founded by Rinat Akhmetov, the 'Steel Front' initiative has engineered protective solutions for military vehicles and shelters that have captured significant attention from NATO partners. These innovations could be deployed to fortify the borders of other nations, such as the frontier between Poland and Russia. The initiative's production capacity is approximately 50 different types of protective structures per month, demonstrating its active wartime operations.

Operational Director of Metinvest Group

Oleksandr Myronenko, the Operational Director of Metinvest Group who oversees steel production for the initiative, stated that the underground hospitals built using its structures meet the NATO ROLE-2 standard. The designs were developed directly during the war, incorporating combat experience and feedback from military personnel. Among the most popular products are protective screens for armored vehicles and underground steel shelters, including bunkers, command posts, and field hospitals.

“We are now working to bring these solutions to the international market, for instance, to fortify the border between Poland and Russia, using our expertise and proposals for underground structures. NATO armies lack this kind of experience, so they view it with great interest. We are exchanging information and experience with them,”

In a separate development, the initiative has begun designing protective systems for Patriot and SAMP/T air defense units. These structures are manufactured at separate, secret locations, with their deployment spanning from the Kharkiv to the Kherson regions. The company also supplies soldiers with ammunition, transport, and reconnaissance equipment. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Metinvest's total aid to Ukraine amounts to UAH 9.3 billion, of which UAH 4.9 billion has been directed to military support under the 'Steel Front' initiative. This private-sector mobilization highlights Ukraine's rapid adaptation of industrial capacity for national defense.

“Today, a steel shelter is essentially an underground house-complete with its own lighting, generator, and life-support systems,”

Oleksandr Myronenko

The 'Steel Front' initiative continues to work actively to provide reliable protection for Ukrainian troops under challenging conditions.

The developments from 'Steel Front' not only strengthen Ukraine's defensive capabilities but also open new avenues for cooperation with international partners, particularly in the context of the threat from Russia. NATO's interest in these engineering solutions underscores the importance of adapting modern technologies to enhance regional security, which could have long-term implications for stability in Eastern Europe.
