Kyiv Metro Station to be Renamed 'Rogoziv Yar' Following Public Vote
Metro Station Renaming Approved
According to Главком: Kyiv's Commission on Naming has decided to rename the under-construction 'Mostytska' metro station to 'Rogoziv Yar'. This decision follows an online public consultation that concluded on February 27th, in which the name 'Rogoziv Yar' secured 41% of the votes cast by Kyiv residents. The alternative name 'Zamkovyshche' received 40%, while 'Rohostynska' garnered 19%. Such naming consultations are part of a broader effort to reflect local history in Kyiv's expanding metro system.
Construction Timeline and Public Reaction
The station, located in the Vynohradar district, is scheduled for structural completion by 2026, with passenger service expected to begin no earlier than 2027. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated on October 9th that at least one station in Vynohradar will be operational by 2026. Some residents have expressed confusion over the new name and are demanding greater transparency from the authorities.
"Call it whatever you want, just finish building it,"
was a typical comment on social media. It's important to note that 'Rogoziv Yar' is the name of a natural ravine located directly adjacent to the future station site. The other proposed names also have deep historical roots:
- 'Rohostynska' is linked to the Rohostynka River and the historical Rohostynska lands, with records dating back to the 15th century;
- 'Zamkovyshche' refers to a historical locality that forms part of the Syrezhchyna ravine.
The debate over renaming the 'Mostytska' station has sparked discussions among residents eagerly awaiting the metro's extension to Vynohradar. The community's engagement in choosing a name reflects a strong interest in local heritage and a desire to participate in the area's development. Authorities must consider these public opinions, as they will shape how the new infrastructure is perceived and integrated into the neighborhood's identity.
