Kyivstar launches testing of satellite communication with Starlink: how it works
The mobile operator 'Kyivstar' in collaboration with Elon Musk's Starlink has launched a new service Direct to Cell, which allows smartphones to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for base stations.
According to the operator, the first stage of testing will last from October to November 2025. Owners of Android smartphones that support LTE can participate in the testing.
Initially, subscribers will only be able to send and receive SMS messages. Voice calls and mobile internet will become available after the commercial launch in the fourth quarter of 2025.
The service will be free for testing participants, with no additional charges. Furthermore, each participant will receive a bonus of 100 SMS per month.
Coverage throughout Ukraine
The Direct to Cell service will be available throughout Ukraine, which will help eliminate 'white spots' in connectivity and ensure communication in remote areas. However, in some areas, such as temporarily occupied regions and zones of active hostilities, the service will be unavailable. In Dnipropetrovsk and Chernihiv regions, the ability to use the new satellite communication is also currently lacking, but the company plans to expand coverage to these regions in the future.
Previously, lifecell, Kyivstar, and Vodafone advised pensioners on ways to reduce communication costs.
Kyivstar and Starlink have started testing satellite communication, allowing subscribers to connect directly to satellites, bypassing the need for base stations. The new service will be free for testing participants and will simplify communication in places with limited access to regular networks. The coverage of Direct to Cell will encompass all of Ukraine, with the exception of temporarily occupied territories and combat zones.
