Court Rules Kyiv Man Not Criminally Responsible in Family Attack

According to Главком: A court in Kyiv has ruled a 28-year-old local man was not criminally responsible for a violent attack on his family in December 2025. The incident occurred in a Kyiv apartment, where the man struck his grandmother in the head with a kettle before strangling her to death. He also assaulted his mother, attempting to strangle her until she lost consciousness. During the attack, the suspect's father was restrained and unable to intervene. Such cases of domestic violence often involve complex underlying mental health issues that are only revealed after a tragedy.

A forensic psychiatric examination concluded the suspect suffers from a mental illness with paranoid syndrome. According to the findings, he was incapable of understanding or controlling his actions at the time of the crime. The Darnytsia District Prosecutor's Office of Kyiv has petitioned the court to impose compulsory medical measures. The suspect's actions have been legally classified as intentional murder and a completed attempted murder. He is currently being held in a specialized medical institution.

Separate Incident in Poland

In a separate case, on January 30, 2026, Polish prosecutors charged a 24-year-old Ukrainian citizen who had been detained the previous day. The incident took place in the town of Kępno, within the Greater Poland Voivodeship, where a teenager died from asphyxiation.

These two violent incidents, occurring in Ukraine and Poland, underscore the critical importance of understanding mental health and its impact on individual behavior. The Kyiv case demonstrates how untreated psychiatric disorders can lead to tragic outcomes within families. The situation in Poland further indicates that such crimes, regardless of where they are committed, have serious consequences and require focused attention from law enforcement to ensure public safety.
