Complete Autonomy in Action

According to НВ — Техно: In January 2026, the Swedish BAE Systems ALMA drone, equipped with Scaleout artificial intelligence, showcased its capability to operate independently at a snowy test range in Sweden. The drone autonomously identified, targeted, and engaged an armored engineering vehicle without any human intervention. The pilot remained on standby throughout the mission, with no role in target selection or attack execution. Scaleout’s AI system managed the entire operation, while the user’s involvement was limited to initiating the mission and setting initial parameters.

Cutting-Edge Advances in Defense Technology

This demonstration was part of the three-day Winter Demo 2026 event hosted by BAE Systems Bofors in Karlskoga, featuring around 20 startups and tech companies, highlighting the surge of innovation within the defense sector. Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist commented on the event, emphasizing the need to expand participation in the defense industry:

“We need more contributors and entrepreneurs in the defense sector.” - Peter Hultqvist

Alongside the Swedish drone, the event spotlighted other notable military technologies, including:

  • The Israeli Harpy loitering munition, operational since the 1990s, designed to autonomously seek and destroy radar emitters;
  • A U.S. Army-developed UAV that set a new endurance record with a flight exceeding eight hours.

This particular drone was designed in under ten minutes and constructed within 24 hours at a mobile manufacturing facility. It surpassed the previous UAV flight duration record by 50 minutes, underscoring the rapid pace and efficiency of modern military tech development. The growing integration of AI and autonomous systems in defense continues to unlock new capabilities and reshape operational strategies.

The successful trials of the Swedish ALMA drone mark a significant leap forward in autonomous warfare technology, potentially transforming combat tactics. The deployment of AI to independently select and engage targets raises important ethical considerations and challenges in command oversight. These advancements are poised to influence military operational doctrines and drive competitive innovation among defense manufacturers and startups worldwide.

The advancements in autonomous military technology are not limited to drones. For instance, the U.S. military is actively developing a rocket launcher that operates without an operator, showcasing a significant shift towards automation in defense systems.
