The Taliban in Afghanistan Ignore Women During Rescue Operations: Details of the Scandal
According to glavcom.ua: After a series of devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan, the Taliban-controlled rescue services pulled only men from the rubble, offering no assistance to women. Such actions are linked to the Taliban's strict religious beliefs, which prohibit physical contact between men and women, even in exceptional situations. Women found themselves in very difficult conditions, as they were injured and denied medical assistance.
The rescue teams hesitated on whether to pull women from the rubble, as they were composed solely of men. As a result, injured women were left under the rubble, hoping for other women from the villages to come and save them. Even those women who managed to free themselves from the rubble were denied medical help.
"It seemed that women were invisible. Initially, help was given to men and children, while women sat separately, waiting for assistance," shared a volunteer.
According to reports, at least 2,200 people died as a result of the earthquake, and 3,600 were injured. The Taliban did not provide statistics on the injured by gender, but testimonies from doctors and women confirm that it was indeed women who are in the most vulnerable state.
As a result of the earthquake in Afghanistan, women found themselves in a difficult situation, as the Taliban-controlled rescue services pulled only men from the rubble and did not provide necessary help to women due to religious prohibitions. This led to women trapped under the rubble being left without necessary assistance and in the most vulnerable state.
