Fake Dollars in Ukraine: NBU Recorded an Increase in Counterfeits

Exchanging 100 dollars: Ukrainians warned about problems
Підроблені гроші в Україні: НБУ зафіксував зростання фальшивок

The National Bank reports an increase in detected counterfeit American currency in the Ukrainian market during the first six months of the current year. NBU statistics show that there are currently 3.4 counterfeit notes for every million genuine dollars in circulation.

Although the counterfeit rate has increased compared to the previous period, hundred-dollar bills remain the most vulnerable. The focus of criminals is on 100-dollar banknotes, which complicates their exchange due to the heightened risk.

How to Identify a Genuine Dollar

In circulation, there are hundred-dollar bills from two generations: those issued before 2013 and those issued later, which contain different security technologies. To determine the authenticity of a banknote, one should pay attention to the following features:

  • Watermark
  • Holographic security ribbon
  • Bell effect in the ink pot
  • Quality paper with raised printing
  • Microprinting around the perimeter of the bill

It is worth noting that the decline in the dollar's share in global reserves to a 30-year low has raised concerns. However, experts emphasize that this is primarily due to currency fluctuations and not mass sales of the American currency. Storing savings in dollars in Ukraine remains safe, and it is forecasted that the exchange rate may reach 42 hryvnias by the end of the year.

The Ukrainian market faces complications due to an increase in the number of fake dollars, particularly hundred-dollar bills. The National Bank emphasizes the importance of caution when exchanging currency and recommends adhering to the listed characteristics to identify genuine money.
