Trump imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods due to oil purchases from Russia

Trump raised tariffs on goods
Трамп запровадив мито у 25% на індійські товари внаслідок закупівлі нафти з Росії.

On August 6, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order imposing an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods in response to New Delhi's continued purchases of Russian oil.

According to an official document from the White House, the new tariffs will take effect 21 days after the order is signed - at 12:01 PM Eastern Time. The tariff will apply to all goods of Indian origin imported into the customs territory of the United States.

The text of the order notes that the government of India 'is currently directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation.' Trump justified the decision as a necessity to address a national emergency related to Russia's actions regarding Ukraine, which was declared in previous orders from 2021 to 2022.

The document suggests the possibility of extending similar measures to other countries. The U.S. Secretary of State, in coordination with other agencies, must determine whether other states are importing Russian oil and provide recommendations for potentially imposing 25% tariffs against them.

The White House administration emphasized that India purchases nearly 39% of Russian crude oil. Earlier, media reported that aides to Indian Prime Minister Modi are planning to visit Russia this week despite Trump's threats to raise tariffs on imports from India. The Indian government stated that both visits are 'part of normal annual consultations' and 'were planned in advance.'

As a result of U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to impose tariffs on Indian goods due to oil purchases from Russia, relations between the U.S., India, and Russia may deteriorate, which could have further implications for the geopolitical situation in the world.
