He emphasized that the priority is the sovereignty of the country, not hypothetical scenarios.
'The Australian government prioritizes its sovereignty and does not discuss hypothetical situations,' he said, commenting on pressure from Washington to clarify Australia's role in the event of a war between the US and China over Taiwan.
Conroy expressed concern about the buildup of Chinese military forces and emphasized the importance of balance in the Indo-Pacific region. He noted that Australia plans to remain a key partner in ensuring security in the region, preventing the dominance of any one country.
Joint military exercises and cooperation with the US
On Sunday, large-scale military exercises with the US, Talisman Sabre, kicked off in Australia, involving 30,000 troops from 19 countries. The exercises will take place over a vast area from Australia's Christmas Island in the Indian Ocean to the Coral Sea. The US remains the main security partner for Australia, expanding its presence at Australian military bases.
Conroy also noted that it is possible for China to observe the exercises with the aim of gathering information, but this has happened before.
The Australian government has stated that it will not be sending its military into conflict zones in advance, depending on the specific situation.
