Dubai Charges 20 Individuals with Cybercrimes for Sharing Videos of Iranian Missile Strikes

People accused of cybercrimes over Iranian missile attacks
В Дубаї затримали 20 осіб за участь у кіберзлочинах, пов’язаних із розповсюдженням відеоматеріалів про іранські ракети.

Dubai's Cybercrime Laws Lead to Charges

According to Главком: Authorities in Dubai have brought cybercrime charges against at least 20 people, including a 60-year-old man from London, for distributing videos related to Iranian missile attacks. The British tourist's arrest occurred after police discovered footage of an Iranian missile strike in the UAE on his phone. This case highlights the severe legal risks of sharing sensitive content in the region, even for visitors. The details were made public by the rights organization Detained in Dubai.

Legal Consequences and Information Control

Under UAE law, recording or distributing material deemed a threat to public safety can lead to criminal prosecution. Police allege the accused may have used the internet or technology to spread false news, rumors, or provocative propaganda. Penalties for such offenses are severe and can include:

  • up to two years' imprisonment;
  • a fine between 20,000 and 200,000 dirhams (approximately $5,400 to $54,500);
  • deportation from the country for foreigners.

Radha Stirling, a representative of the rights group, stated that

"the alleged behavior could be something as simple as sharing or commenting on a video that is already circulating online."

She added,

"Anyone who alters, reposts, or comments on this content could similarly face charges."

In the current Middle East climate, authorities in several regional nations, including Israel and other Gulf states, have tightened information controls, restricting the publication of materials about missile strikes or impact sites.

This incident underscores the strictness of laws governing the information space in the United Arab Emirates, where disseminating content considered a security threat carries serious consequences. Given the tense regional political situation, such government actions reinforce information control and could have significant implications for tourists and residents who use social media or popular content-sharing platforms.
