Kyiv Court to Try Drug Ring That Smuggled Cannabis in Dental Casts
Organized Crime Group Faces Trial
According to Прокуратура Київ: A Kyiv court is set to try five members of an organized crime group that sold cannabis concealed inside plaster dental casts. The group was uncovered in March 2025 during an undercover sting operation. The defendants' actions are being prosecuted under Part 3 of Article 307 of Ukraine's Criminal Code. This case highlights the innovative, and often brazen, methods used by traffickers to evade detection.
Case Details
Investigators identified a 30-year-old Kyiv resident as the ringleader of the operation. The eight-member group used a Telegram channel to find buyers and distributed the drugs both by car and through the postal service. The plaster for the casts was ordered by mail from the city of Dnipro, and the finished products, containing the drugs, were shipped to customers disguised as legitimate dental samples.
During raids, authorities seized 1.5 kg of cannabis with an estimated street value of 1.5 million hryvnias. An indictment against five members of the organized group has been sent to court, while the three other participants are currently wanted. Members of the group performed various roles:
- packaging the product,
- administering the Telegram channel,
- transporting or shipping the cannabis,
- providing security.
This prosecution is part of a broader effort by Ukrainian law enforcement to combat the illegal drug trade. The use of modern technologies like Telegram channels demonstrates how criminal networks are adapting to contemporary conditions, making their detection and dismantling more challenging. Investigating and prosecuting such groups remains a critical step in ensuring public safety and reducing access to illegal narcotics.
