Lviv Hospital Achieves Milestone with Pediatric Heart Transplant

According to Главком: On April 30, a three-hour surgery at Lviv's Children's Hospital made history as the first heart transplant from a child to a child in the region. The recipient was 12-year-old Nazar Mazur from Vinnytsia region, who faced severe health challenges. In 2023, he was diagnosed with blood cancer and dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition that reduced his heart's ejection fraction to just 10%.

Nazar's mother, Anastasiia Mazur, was also battling thyroid cancer, while his father was serving on the front lines. Following his diagnosis, Nazar underwent chemotherapy but was admitted to intensive care three months later with COVID-19 pneumonia. His critical condition made a donor heart essential for survival.

The donor was a 10-year-old girl who died in a road traffic accident. After brain death was confirmed, her parents consented to posthumous donation. Anastasiia Mazur expressed deep gratitude to the donor's family:

“I pray every day and thank the girl’s family, who, despite their terrible loss, agreed to donation and saved our Nazar. We want as many people as possible to know about transplants.”

Recovery and Nazar's Dreams

Nazar is recovering well after the successful operation. He has big dreams, including becoming president of Ukraine and helping children. The boy also looks forward to returning to Ladyzhyn and enjoying cheese lavash cooked on a grill.

This is not Lviv's first heart transplant-doctors previously transplanted a heart into 18-year-old Maksym Kolos from the Lviv region. However, this child-to-child procedure marks a significant advancement for Ukrainian medicine.

The successful transplant underscores progress in Ukraine's transplantology field and raises awareness about the importance of organ donation.
