Mosaic Discovery in Aspendos

According to НВ — Техно: On June 19 at 11:15 AM, archaeologists uncovered a 2nd–3rd century CE mosaic in the ancient city of Aspendos, located in what is now Turkey's Antalya Province. This scientifically significant find features the river god Eurymedon. The mosaic was discovered during excavations on Theatre Street, which once connected Aspendos's acropolis to its Roman theater.

The mosaic belongs to a structure in the Eastern Square area, situated between the square and the eastern city walls. At the center of the composition is a figure identified as the youthful Eurymedon, a river god representing the ancient Eurymedon River-known today as the Köprüçay River. The discovered structure on Eastern Square measures roughly 6 by 25 meters, with archaeologists having completed excavations on a section approximately 6 by 7.5 meters.

Archaeological Research and Its Importance

Initial assessments indicate the building was first constructed as a pool or water-related structure in the early 3rd century CE. Following an earthquake in 262 CE, it was likely subdivided into smaller spaces with interior walls. The visible mosaic floor consists of two main panels: one with geometric decoration and another featuring a figurative scene. The young Eurymedon is depicted with reed leaves on his head and in his hand, reclining beside an amphora from which water flows, with fish swimming around him.

The mosaic was crafted from small tesserae, reflecting the high skill level of ancient artisans. Turkey's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, hailed the Eurymedon mosaic discovery as one of great scientific importance. This find underscores the value of archaeological work in a region that has previously yielded other significant artifacts, including rock art uncovered during field surveys in the Tokhma Canyon area.
