Major Archaeological Discovery in Bulgaria

According to НВ — Техно: On June 17, researchers announced a significant find in Bulgaria: a marble statue fragment unearthed during excavations at Heraclea Sintica. Preliminary analysis suggests it may represent the goddess Artemis. The dig is led by Professor Lyudmil Vagalinsky of the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. Key evidence for the identification comes from details on the statue's footwear, which resembles hunting-style sandals commonly associated with depictions of Artemis. The statue is believed to have been life-sized. A marble head previously discovered at the same site may belong to the same sculpture, though this has not yet been confirmed.

'Heraclea has erupted again!' noted Lyudmil Vagalinsky.

Excavations at Heraclea Sintica are ongoing throughout the summer season. The statue's pedestal is located in front of the ancient Temple of Heracles. It is worth noting that Artemis had a strong cult presence in the Middle Struma region during antiquity, further supporting the hypothesis regarding the statue's purpose.

Unique Artifact Found in the Rhodope Mountains

Separately, in the Rhodope Mountains of southern Bulgaria, archaeologists have uncovered a unique artifact: a prehistoric star map carved into stone. The stone measures roughly 2 by 3 meters and is aligned along an east–west axis. A natural marble vein running through it symbolizes the Milky Way. Carved into the surface are 56 depressions of varying diameters, among which several constellations have been identified, including:

  • Ursa Major
  • Leo
  • Cassiopeia
  • Cygnus
  • Lyra
  • The Pleiades

Preliminary assessments suggest this find could become one of the oldest known depictions of the night sky in human history.

These archaeological discoveries highlight the richness of Bulgaria's cultural heritage and the region's importance as a center of ancient civilization. The uncovering of the Artemis statue sheds light on the cult traditions and religious practices that once flourished here, while the star map opens new avenues for studying ancient astronomical knowledge. These events may drive further research and preservation of Bulgaria's historical legacy.

In addition to the remarkable discovery of the marble fragment, the ongoing archaeological efforts in Bulgaria continue to yield fascinating finds. For instance, an 11th-century sword recently uncovered in Poland highlights the significance of amateur contributions to historical research, showcasing how dedicated individuals can uncover valuable artifacts that enrich our understanding of the past.
