Illegal Catch of a Massive Catfish Leads to Arrest

According to Главком: In Warsaw, police detained a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen on suspicion of illegally catching a giant catfish measuring over 180 cm in length from Lake Balaton. The incident took place on May 30 in the Gocław neighborhood (Praga-Południe district). According to reports, two men were fishing from a pedal boat using a rod, and then placed the caught fish in a car trunk. Notably, this particular catfish had lived in the lake for more than 20 years.

The man arrested in Warsaw violated a ban on catfish fishing that is in effect from January 1 to May 31. Additionally, the Polish Fishing Association prohibits fishing from floating devices. This case highlights ongoing concerns about ecology and the protection of fish resources in the region.

Poaching Incidents in Ukraine

Separately, Ukraine has also recorded poaching cases. On the Rostavytsia River, inspectors from the Environmental Control Point uncovered a violation where a poacher used two nets to catch:

  • 29 crayfish
  • 8 silver crucian carp
  • 6 perch
  • 6 bream
  • 3 roach
  • 2 pikeperch
  • 2 ruffe

In Hostomel, a 41-year-old man was detained for illegal fishing using nets and a rubber boat. The damage in this case amounted to over 158,000 Ukrainian hryvnias, and the fishing occurred during the spawning season.

These incidents point to serious issues related to poaching in fisheries, both in Ukraine and abroad, requiring proper attention from relevant authorities.

The detention of a Ukrainian citizen in Poland and poaching cases in Ukraine underscore the need for stronger measures to protect water resources and regulate fishing. This is important not only for preserving biodiversity but also for maintaining ecological balance in regions where fishing is a significant economic factor.

The recent arrest in Warsaw highlights a growing trend of illegal fishing activities, which are not isolated to Poland. Similar incidents have been reported in Ukraine, where poachers have been caught with endangered species, raising alarms about the state of local ecosystems.
