Shifting Trends in Ukrainian Family Life During 2025

According to Главком: Ukraine witnessed a notable shift in family dynamics in 2025, with marriage registrations climbing by 10% while divorces fell by 12%. The national figures show 165,587 new marriages were formed, against 124,785 dissolutions. This reversal marks a significant change in the country's approach to marital commitment and family structure, a trend being closely watched by sociologists.

The capital city of Kyiv drove much of this national increase, registering 37,898 marriages-accounting for one in every four new Ukrainian families. This figure is 1.8 times higher than in 2024 and 1.5 times above pre-war levels. Significant growth was also seen in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 19,151 marriages (a one-third increase) and in Lviv Oblast, where 13,325 couples formalized their unions.

Regional Variations in Marriage and Divorce Statistics

Despite the overall national growth, several regions experienced a decline in marriages. For instance, in frontline Donetsk Oblast, the number fell by 40%, with decreases of 15% in Cherkasy Oblast and 14% in Rivne Oblast. Divorces processed through civil registry offices (RACS) dropped by 23%, representing over 26,000 fewer cases. However, the vast majority of dissolutions-over 98,000-were still finalized through the courts.

This positive shift is particularly striking when compared to 2024, when the numbers of new and dissolved marriages were nearly equal, with roughly 7 divorces for every 10 new unions. Another indicator of changing attitudes is the 2,773 couples who signed prenuptial agreements last year, suggesting a growing interest in formalizing the legal aspects of marriage.

These statistics point to an evolving social mindset among Ukrainians regarding marriage and divorce. They suggest that, despite ongoing challenges, many couples are choosing to build new families. The rise in marriages and concurrent fall in divorces may reflect a renewed confidence in family as an institution and a desire for stability within society.

While regional disparities highlight the influence of local economic and social conditions on personal decisions, the overarching national trend indicates a positive change in the country's social climate.
