Official Recognition for Vyshyvanka Day

According to Главком: A petition drive led by the civic organization 'Defense of the State' is calling on Ukraine's parliament to grant Vyshyvanka Day official state holiday status. Signatures are being collected across all regions of Ukraine until May 20. The initiative has drawn support from soldiers, veterans, volunteers, cultural figures, regional leaders, and local bloggers.

What the Holiday Represents

Vyshyvanka Day is celebrated annually on the third Thursday of May and has been observed for 20 years. According to representatives of the organization, 'For two decades, Vyshyvanka Day has been a genuine folk holiday celebrated by millions in Ukraine and far beyond its borders. Since the onset of the full-scale war, this day has taken on deeper meaning. The embroidered shirt, or vyshyvanka, has become a symbol of resilience, unity, and the bond between those working on the home front and those fighting on the front lines. Yet Ukraine still lacks an official state holiday for Vyshyvanka Day. That is why we believe the state should formally recognize what the people have long decided on their own. The organization will appeal to the Verkhovna Rada to draft and support the necessary legislation.'

Signatures can be submitted at the organization's offices through May 20 inclusive. Vyshyvanka Day will be observed on May 21, 2025, with themed photo zones set up in regional capitals. Exact locations for these photo zones will be announced on the social media channels of 'Defense of the State' regional branches.

The push by 'Defense of the State' to officially recognize Vyshyvanka Day reflects the growing popularity of this celebration in Ukraine, which has become a powerful marker of national identity, especially amid the ongoing war. Backing from diverse groups-including military personnel and cultural leaders-underscores the vyshyvanka's role as a symbol of Ukrainian culture and solidarity. The signature collection running until May 20 gives citizens a chance to voice their opinion on the matter, potentially paving the way for legislative change and formal recognition of the holiday.

As the movement to officially recognize Vyshyvanka Day gains momentum, many are already looking ahead to the celebrations planned for the coming years.
