The Current State of Ukraine's Demining Efforts

According to Кабмін: Since the full-scale invasion began, Ukraine has successfully cleared and returned to use 40,700 square kilometers of territory. Within this area, 15,100 hectares are agricultural lands made safe through the state-led 'Humanitarian Demining' program. Despite this progress, a vast area exceeding 130,000 square kilometers remains potentially hazardous due to explosive remnants of war. This contamination poses one of the most significant long-term challenges to the nation's recovery and food security.

Future Plans and Programs

The most heavily contaminated regions include Kharkiv, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Donetsk. To tackle this, the number of certified demining operators has recently increased from 74 to 134, reflecting a major scaling-up of operations. A compensation program is active for individuals and self-employed farmers to cover demining costs, with applications processed through the State Agrarian Register. The 'Soul of Soil' awareness campaign also continues.

Plans for 2024 aim to return nearly 10,000 additional hectares to use, prioritizing agricultural land.

“We are also converting this challenge into expertise: refining our demining methods, reducing costs, and deploying Ukrainian robotic systems,”

noted Yulia Svyrydenko. Demining work involves the private sector, the State Emergency Service (SES), and the State Special Transport Service (SSTS).

Continuing demining is critical for restoring agricultural production and ensuring public safety. The increase in operators and active state programs demonstrate the Ukrainian government's commitment to addressing this immense task. The integration of advanced technologies and robotic systems is expected to significantly boost efficiency, accelerating the return of vital land to productive use.
