Phone Call Between Ukraine’s Defense Minister and His Norwegian Counterpart

According to Главком: Ahead of the Ramstein gathering, Ukraine’s defense minister held a working call with Norway’s Tore Onshuus Sandvik. During their conversation, they agreed on four priority areas for assistance: long-range munitions, Patriot missiles, contributions to the PURL fund, and Ukrainian-made drones.

  • Long-range munitions
  • Patriot missiles
  • Contributions to the PURL fund
  • Ukrainian drones

The Patriot missile discussions were conducted through the JUMPSTART mechanism, an international tool designed to fast-track arms procurement for Ukraine.

Additionally, they explored ways to quickly channel extra funding to the Ukrainian military before European loan funds become available. Countering ballistic threats remains Ukraine’s most pressing challenge, highlighting the critical need for collaboration with global allies. Earlier the same day, the minister also met with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, underscoring Ukraine’s active diplomatic push on defense issues.

Joint Drone Production with Norway

Notably, Ukraine and Norway have launched joint production of mid-strike drones on Norwegian soil to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This initiative further strengthens Ukraine’s defense capabilities and advances military technology development. The agreed priorities-including long-range munitions under the Czech initiative, Patriot missiles, PURL fund contributions, and Ukrainian drones-reflect a strategic approach to safeguarding Ukraine amid ongoing challenges.

Ukraine’s collaboration with international partners, particularly Norway and NATO, underscores the importance of sustained support in the face of prolonged military aggression. Successful implementation of these priorities could significantly bolster Ukraine’s defenses, especially against ballistic threats. It also signals Ukraine’s deepening integration into global defense frameworks, a key factor in ensuring the country’s national security.

As Ukraine enhances its defense capabilities through collaborations with international partners, Norway's recent commitment of $300 million for advanced missile systems plays a crucial role. This funding not only supports Ukraine's immediate military needs but also aligns with the broader strategy discussed in the recent talks.
