Zelenskyy Orders Development of Low-Cost Missiles to Counter Shahed Drones in Ukraine
Affordable Interceptor Missiles Under Development for Drone Threats
According to Главком: Ukraine is advancing a project to create inexpensive missiles designed to intercept Russian Shahed kamikaze drones, following a direct directive from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has confirmed that several technological concepts have moved past the development phase and are now undergoing active testing. The core objective is to produce a cost-effective weapon system that avoids wasting expensive Western air defense missiles on cheap Iranian-made unmanned aerial vehicles.
Fedorov stated: 'On the President's orders, we are now focused on building affordable missiles to shoot down drones. We have already identified solutions that are close to being ready and have begun testing them.'
The government is supporting this effort through grants, production expansion, and relaunching team recruitment for this specific direction. Plans call for scaling up manufacturing significantly, aiming to build a substantial stockpile ahead of the autumn and winter months.
The defense minister added: 'Our goal is to scale production tenfold and have a reserve of these missiles for the fall-winter period. We want to scale up and reduce the cost of interceptor missiles to prepare for the arrival of jet-powered drones.'
It is also worth noting that Ukraine's Ministry of Defense, together with international partners, is actively working to accelerate the production and delivery of weapons for the country's combat aviation.
Earlier this year, Ukraine completed development of its first domestically produced guided aerial bomb, which has passed all testing phases and is ready for frontline use. These initiatives highlight Ukraine's broader push to strengthen its defense capabilities and adapt to evolving threats.
The Strategic Value of New Technology
Creating low-cost interceptor missiles represents a critical step for Ukraine in bolstering its air defense capacity. This approach will help reduce overall spending on protecting the skies while enabling a more agile response to emerging security challenges. With the persistent threat of kamikaze drones, the ability to manufacture affordable missiles will give Ukrainian forces a significant tactical advantage.
In addition to developing low-cost interceptor missiles, Ukraine has also made significant strides in enhancing its aerial capabilities. Recently, the country showcased its first domestically produced guided bomb, which is now ready for deployment. This advancement not only complements the missile project but also reflects Ukraine's commitment to innovating its defense strategies.
