Eight Russian casualties for every Ukrainian one: Ukraine has finally reached battlefield parity with Russia.
How technology is shifting the war
According to ХВИЛЯ: American analyst Peter Zeihan says the full-scale invasion, now in its fourth year, has reached a new phase: Ukraine is for the first time fighting Russia on equal terms. The shift is driven by advanced military technology, especially drones with onboard memory that select targets using a built-in hierarchy and resist electronic jamming. Ukrainian units now regularly hold an eight-to-one casualty ratio in their favor, according to Zeihan. That is a dramatic reversal from February 2026, when Ukraine was slowly losing ground because of a demographic imbalance. Independent research centers such as CSIS have confirmed that Russian-to-Ukrainian losses reached nearly eight to one in the first half of 2026.
For most of the war, casualty ratios stayed between two-to-one and three-to-one. In May 2026, however, Ukraine's Defense Forces retook more territory than Russian troops occupied during the same period-the first such case since 2023. Zeihan sees this as a possible turning point, but he warns against treating parity as victory.
“Any battle in which Ukrainians are not inflicting eight-to-one losses on Russians is a battle Ukrainians are losing.”
He also stressed that
“an equal fight does not yet mean a win.”
The bigger picture
Current analyst data indicates that Ukraine now has the capability to actively counter Russian forces, and that this technological edge is influencing the course of the war as well as prospects for territorial change. The report comes from Ukrainian publication Khvylya, based on a conversation between Petro Kurzin and Peter Zeihan for the project The Global Gambit.
Taken together, these indicators point to significant Ukrainian progress in using cutting-edge technology on the battlefield. The improving casualty exchange rate and the recapture of territory may reflect broader shifts in the conflict's momentum. The international community's response, and continued support for Ukraine's efforts to restore its territorial integrity, will be crucial. How events next unfold could also have major implications for strategic stability across the region.
As Ukraine continues to gain the upper hand on the battlefield, analysts suggest that a strategy of systematic attrition could be key to securing a decisive victory over Russian forces.
