Babi Yar: The History of Tragedy

Babi Yar is a place that became a symbol of the horrific crimes during the Holocaust. In the fall of 1941, after the Nazis occupied Kyiv, mass deportation and extermination of the Jewish population began. Initially, victims were taken out of the city, but then it was decided to carry out executions right at Babi Yar.

Within a few days, thousands of people were shot at Babi Yar, including women, children, the elderly, and those who defended them. This site became a symbol not only of the Jewish genocide but also of other crimes committed during the war. According to various estimates, approximately 100,000 people died in Babi Yar during the German occupation, including Ukrainians, Romani people, and other nationalities.

Remembrance Day for the victims of Babi Yar is important for honoring the memory of those who became victims of horrific crimes during World War II. This date serves as a reminder of the tragic events of the past and calls us to remember history to avoid the repetition of such tragedies in the future.
