Ukraine Turns to Cheap Electronic Warfare Systems as a Substitute for Air Defense Missiles
Ukraine Develops a Low-Cost Alternative to the Patriot System
According to Главком: Facing relentless aerial threats from Russia, Ukraine is increasingly relying on electronic warfare (EW) systems as a budget-friendly replacement for traditional air defense missiles. One notable example is the Lima system, created by the defense startup Cascade Systems. Rather than destroying targets through physical force, Lima disrupts their navigation, effectively countering enemy attacks without firing a single projectile.
More than 400 Lima units have been delivered to Ukraine as of today, with deployment beginning in July 2024. Since October 2025, these systems have been tasked with protecting civilian infrastructure. Over an 18-month period, Lima managed to jam 20,500 Shahed drones and redirect dozens of ballistic and cruise missiles. Each unit costs approximately €58,000, making it an affordable solution for a nation facing constant aggression.
New Upgrades for the Lima System
Cascade Systems recently announced enhanced versions of Lima designed to counter weapons relying on the GLONASS satellite navigation system. The initial iterations of the system emerged in 2022 to tackle cruise missiles. The company invested over $2 million of its own funds to develop Lima.
Beyond simply suppressing navigation, we employ coordinate spoofing and shift coordinates by several kilometers. We can make their missiles fall into fields instead of hitting their targets.

However, the situation on the front lines remains challenging. In early 2025, Russian forces began using upgraded Kometa antennas, which reduced the effectiveness of earlier EW versions. This has pushed Ukrainian developers to seek new solutions. Maksym Skoretsky, an EW systems expert, commented: 'But will Russian ballistic missiles hit their intended target when Lima is activated? I would say that is unlikely.'
On the night of May 24, Russia launched one of its most massive attacks on Kyiv, employing various missile types and hundreds of drones. This incident underscores the critical role of EW systems for Ukraine. As Alchemik noted: 'That is when real life began. We lived in our lab, trying to crack the new Russian antennas.'
Thus, the Lima system is becoming a key component of Ukraine's strategy to counter aerial threats, offering an effective and economical means of protecting national security.
The adoption of EW systems like Lima highlights Ukraine's evolving approach to defending against air attacks, a tactic growing increasingly relevant amid escalating aggression. It also showcases the potential of Ukraine's defense sector to develop innovative technologies that could shift the dynamics of combat. Furthermore, the advancement of the Lima system may spur further investment in the defense industry and foster collaboration with international partners.
As Ukraine explores innovative defense strategies, it's worth noting how the Ukrainian border guards are adapting to modern threats. Utilizing unconventional methods, such as controlling drones at night with an Xbox controller, they are enhancing their operational capabilities. This approach not only showcases the ingenuity of Ukrainian forces but also highlights the broader trend of integrating technology in warfare.
