Ukraine has launched over 570 MW of new generation: how this will change the energy system
Implementation of New Decentralized Capacities in Ukraine
According to Кулеба: In Ukraine, over 570 MW of new decentralized capacities in the municipal sector have been put into operation. This became possible due to the involvement of about 600 cogeneration units, 400 block-modular boiler houses, and 28 gas turbine units. These new generation capacities aim to strengthen the country's energy system by providing greater flexibility and reliability of electricity supply.
Plans for the Future
In 2025, new measures to support the development of distributed generation are planned. Among the main initiatives are:
- a special gas price for distributed generation facilities in frontline regions;
- simplification of procedures for installing cogeneration facilities.
This will significantly accelerate the implementation of new energy projects.
Moreover, to support energy stability in frontline areas, UAH 665 million has been allocated for fuel for backup power sources. In 2026, over 500 MW of new decentralized capacities are planned to be introduced, indicating further development in this area in Ukraine. It is also planned to resume competitions for the construction of generating capacities and simplify permits for drilling wells and purchasing equipment.
Overall, the implementation of new decentralized capacities and support for distributed generation aim to enhance energy security and reduce dependence on centralized electricity supply sources in Ukraine. These measures are crucial for adapting the energy system to the challenges arising in the context of the current geopolitical situation, as well as for ensuring the stable operation of the energy sector in regions facing the greatest risks. The development of decentralized capacities can significantly improve the availability of electricity for the population and businesses, contributing to economic growth in the country.
