Ukraine Shifts Strategy on Refugee Return: Community Support Replaces Individual Aid
Community Support and the Return of Ukrainians
According to Міністерство соц. політики: Denys Uliutin, Minister of Social Policy, Family, and Unity, stressed that backing local communities is essential for bringing Ukrainians back once active hostilities end. He noted that roughly 2 million people intend to return to Ukraine, making it vital for towns and cities to prepare for an influx of new residents who will need access to social services and infrastructure.
'That is why the focus must shift from individual assistance for returnees to strengthening communities. This is an approach that benefits every Ukrainian,' Uliutin stated during a panel discussion for the LB.ua project 'New Country'.
Unity Centers Across Europe
As part of this initiative, Ukraine has already opened its first Unity Center in Berlin, offering guidance on opportunities both in host countries and back home. The government also plans to establish Unity Centers in the Czech Republic and Sweden, demonstrating active efforts to support Ukrainians abroad. These hubs aim to help Ukrainians adapt and gather the information they need to repatriate.
The Ukrainian government’s work to bolster communities and assist citizens overseas reflects a recognition that a comprehensive approach is needed for post-war recovery. Opening these Unity Centers marks a key step in creating conditions for refugees to return and integrate into society. Such initiatives could drive not only social but also economic renewal for Ukraine in the years ahead.
As Ukraine continues to strengthen its community support initiatives, the country is also expanding its network of Unity Centers abroad. These hubs, with the next ones planned for the Czech Republic and Sweden, are designed to facilitate the return of Ukrainians by providing essential resources and guidance.
