Ukrainians in Poland need to update their data in the PESEL register to avoid losing UKR status
Ukrainians who are in Poland under temporary protection need to check the relevance of their data in the PESEL register. The authorities have set a deadline for updating this information — until August 31, 2026. Failure to comply with this requirement may lead to the loss of UKR status and related rights. This is reported by InPoland.
Who needs to update their data in the PESEL register
The requirement applies not to all Ukrainians but only to certain categories of PESEL UKR holders.
Citizens who need to update their information include:
- Those who received PESEL based on a passport that has already expired
- Those who obtained PESEL without a foreign passport, including based on a birth certificate
- Those who obtained a new foreign passport after receiving their PESEL number
- Those who changed their personal information, such as surname after marriage
- Those who applied for PESEL for children without a passport or after document replacement
How to update PESEL UKR data in Poland
To update the information, it is necessary to contact the city or municipal office where you reside.
You need to bring a valid foreign passport. In some cases, officials may additionally ask to provide fingerprints.
If you do not have a foreign passport, it is recommended to obtain one before visiting local government authorities.

Why it is important not to miss the deadline
It is necessary to update the data by August 31, 2026.
The Polish authorities emphasize that discrepancies between the information in the PESEL register and actual documents may be grounds for losing UKR status.
This, in turn, will affect the ability to enjoy the rights provided by temporary protection in Poland, including legal residence, employment, and access to social services.
Against the backdrop of extending temporary protection for Ukrainians, the Polish authorities urge not to postpone updating data and to check the relevance of all documents in advance.
