Ukrainians are increasingly facing bullying in this EU country
More and more Ukrainians in Germany want to stay there for a long time, but feel that the attitude towards them is gradually worsening. This data was published by the Federal Institute for Population Research (BiB), which conducted a large-scale survey among refugees. This is reported by the publication In Poland.
More Ukrainians plan to stay
According to the survey, 59% of Ukrainians currently living in Germany plan to stay there for a significant period, regardless of the course of the war. In comparison, in 2022, only 37% felt this way. However, at the same time, the level of perceived acceptance is decreasing. Two years ago, 76% of respondents claimed they felt like welcomed guests, while now this figure has dropped to 32%.
Ukrainian teenagers are the most vulnerable group
Researchers paid special attention to Ukrainian children and teenagers. Only 34% of young Ukrainians aged 14-17 want to stay in Germany, despite good adaptation and language skills. It is among girls of this age group that the highest levels of emotional difficulties, feelings of isolation, and instances of bullying in schools and communities are recorded.
Researchers emphasize that the deterioration of mental health among teenagers is related not only to cultural adaptation but also to the sense of indifference from local residents.
Overall situation of Ukrainians in Germany
Around 1.2 million Ukrainians currently reside in the country - this is the second largest group of migrants after the Turkish diaspora. At the same time, about 10% of citizens who arrived after the start of the full-scale invasion have already returned home or moved to other EU states.
Key findings from the BiB study:
- the share of Ukrainians who want to stay in Germany has increased by 22% over the past two years;
- at the same time, the level of feeling of 'hospitality' has halved;
- among the youth, instances of emotional burnout and bullying are becoming more frequent.
Earlier, we reported that the number of Ukrainian refugees seeking protection in Germany has increased. According to the publication 'Welt', over the last few weeks, the number of Ukrainians arriving in Germany has increased tenfold.
