Ukrainians Shift the Date of Ivan Kupala Once Again

Ukrainians celebrate Ivan Kupala
Традиції святкування Івана Купала знову змінюються в українському календарі.

The Festival of Ivan Kupala

According to Главком: Ivan Kupala is a celebration that blends pre-Christian summer solstice rituals with the Christian observance of the Nativity of John the Baptist. Since the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church adopted the Revised Julian calendar, the holiday has moved from July 6–7 to June 23–24. In 2026, Kupala Night will fall on June 23–24. This festival is deeply rooted in Ukrainian culture, with enduring traditions such as the Kupala bonfire, wreath weaving, swimming in rivers and lakes, gathering medicinal herbs, and the mythical search for the fern flower.

The holiday merges ancient pagan customs linked to the summer solstice with the Christian celebration of John the Baptist's birth. Until 2023, Ukrainian Orthodox churches followed the Julian calendar, which determined the holiday's date. The switch to the Revised Julian calendar pushed all fixed church feasts back by 13 days, leading to the change for Ivan Kupala. Some people still adhere to the old tradition and celebrate on the night of July 6–7.

Core Traditions of the Festival

Key customs of Ivan Kupala include:

  • The Kupala bonfire, symbolizing purification;
  • Weaving wreaths, which young women cast into the water hoping for a happy marriage;
  • Bathing in bodies of water;
  • Collecting medicinal herbs;
  • Searching for the legendary fern flower, which botanically does not bloom but reproduces through spores.

Kupala traditions are not unique to Ukraine; they also appear in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and other European countries. Over one hundred Ukrainian folk Kupala songs have survived to the present day, many of which are preserved in folklore collections. The church celebrates the Nativity of John the Baptist on June 24, but most Kupala rituals have pre-Christian origins.

Today, Ivan Kupala is marked by folk festivities, wreath-making workshops, concerts by folklore ensembles, and theatrical performances. It is important to observe safety rules during the celebrations, especially near water and when using open fire. According to folk beliefs, heavy morning dew foretells a bountiful harvest, while a clear and warm day promises a good grain yield.

Thus, Ivan Kupala remains a vital element of Ukrainian culture, bridging ancient customs and modern traditions.

The shift of Ivan Kupala to the Revised Julian calendar represents a significant step in preserving Ukraine's cultural heritage, as the holiday reflects deep aspects of Ukrainian identity. Despite the calendar change, the traditions associated with Kupala Night remain relevant and continue to unite people, contributing to the revival of national culture. Celebrating Ivan Kupala can also serve as a platform to promote Ukrainian folklore and traditions among younger generations and tourists.
