Poland is preparing for major changes for Ukrainian citizens after the special law expires. Temporary protection, introduced due to the full-scale war, will end on March 4, 2026, and the government does not plan to extend it. Instead, new mechanisms for legalizing residence, accessing the labor market, healthcare, and social support will be introduced. This is reported by InPoland.

As previously emphasized by Polish President Karol Nawrocki, Ukrainians should enjoy the same rights and obligations as other foreigners. The Polish Ministry of Interior emphasizes that the special law was a temporary solution for an emergency situation and no longer corresponds to current conditions.

What will change for Ukrainians in Poland after March 4, 2026

After the temporary protection expires, Ukrainians with a PESEL UKR number will be able to apply for a three-year residence permit. New arrivals will still have the right to temporary protection, but must apply for PESEL UKR within 14 days of entry. Failure to register after entry will be considered a de facto refusal of such status.

Living conditions and social support will also change:

  • short-term free accommodation will only be provided in emergencies, except for vulnerable groups;
  • the 800 Plus payments for children will be made only if the parents are officially employed in Poland.

New rules for Ukrainians in Poland: healthcare and social guarantees

Access to a full package of medical services will only be available to insured individuals or those who pay medical contributions. Uninsured Ukrainians with temporary protection will only be able to receive emergency assistance for clearly defined cases: for pregnant women, women after childbirth, and individuals under 18 years old.

The Polish government emphasizes that the new rules aim to unify the approach to all foreigners and streamline the support system without additional emergency mechanisms.

We remind you that Polish President Karol Nawrocki signed changes to the law on foreigners, which significantly alters the procedure for obtaining residence permits.
