Ukrainian Aonishiki Sets Sumo Record: How It Happened

Ukrainian Danilo Yavhusishin, known as sumo wrestler Aonishiki, has risen to the towering heights of world sumo, achieving the rank of Sekiwake - the third highest rank in this sport. This occurred after only 13 tournaments, setting a new record since the beginning of the modern sumo system in 1958. The Japanese embassy in Ukraine celebrated this achievement and wished him success in the upcoming competitions in Kyushu, starting on November 9.

Aonishiki Arata is the second Ukrainian in professional sumo after Shishi, who entered this niche back in 2020. Competing for the Adzhigawa team, he achieved an impressive 11 victories in his first five tournaments as a Sekitori and was among the winners in July 2025. His successes reflect a high level of training and professionalism of the athlete.

On another front, at the European Sumo Championship for boys under 18 in Tallinn, the Ukrainian team demonstrated impressive results, winning a total of 20 medals. This indicates the gradual development of the discipline in Ukraine and prospects for young talents in the sport.
