Lending in Ukraine: new directions and challenges

According to НБУ: The Director of the Financial Stability Department, Pervin Dadashova, shared her insights on lending in Ukraine in an interview with Mind.UA. She emphasized that the banking sector is quickly establishing lending for new areas, particularly energy. However, according to Dadashova, a bank cannot provide funds if a client is unable to clearly articulate their financial needs and provide reporting.

One of the initiatives that contributes to the development of lending is the "Affordable Loans 5-7-9%" program, which has allowed Ukrainian banks to effectively work with small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). However, there are challenges:

  • The increased profit tax on banks raises doubts about the feasibility of significant credit growth for many banks.

Insurance systems for wartime risks

Dadashova also noted that the best way to build a system for insuring wartime risks is to expand the existing public-private partnership. These factors shape the current landscape of lending in Ukraine, indicating the need to adapt to new conditions.

The situation with lending in Ukraine reflects general trends in the economy, particularly the need to support small and medium-sized enterprises, which are a crucial element of recovery after crises. The "Affordable Loans 5-7-9%" program could become a key tool for stimulating economic growth, but its effectiveness depends on the ability of banks to adapt to new conditions and challenges they face. Expanding the public-private partnership for insuring wartime risks could also enhance the stability of the financial sector in times of instability.

As the banking sector in Ukraine rapidly adapts to new lending opportunities, particularly in energy, it is essential to consider how these developments compare to the surge in business lending in high-risk areas. Understanding the dynamics of credit growth in challenging environments can provide valuable insights into the overall resilience and strategies of financial institutions during these turbulent times.
