Why Ukraine's Government is Blocking the Export of Its Interceptor Drones to the Middle East
Successful Operations Against Iranian Drones
According to Главком: Ukrainian specialists have successfully downed several Iranian drones in a Middle Eastern country. Despite this proven capability, direct sales of Ukrainian interceptor drones to nations in the region are being blocked at the highest state level. According to BBC sources, Ukraine has received supply requests from 11 different countries. This growing demand highlights Ukraine's emergence as a significant developer of counter-drone technology following its extensive battlefield experience.
Approximately 230 military operators were deployed with interceptor drones to conduct operations against Iranian drones. Ukrainian manufacturers of these systems have received dozens of commercial proposals from Gulf and Middle Eastern countries, as well as intermediaries. At least two major interceptor drone producers have already submitted applications to the interdepartmental commission on military-technical cooperation and export control. These applications require approval from the State Export Control Service (SECS), but currently, there is neither a permit nor an explicit state-level ban on the export.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that more than 10 countries have approached Ukraine for support in defending against 'Shahed' drones.
"Our teams are already working with five states on countering 'Shaheds' – we have provided expert assessments and are helping to build defense systems," he said.
Ukraine has also sent 201 experts on Iranian 'Shahed' drones to the Middle East.
Prospects for Cooperation and Drone Procurement
Furthermore, the Japanese government is considering the possibility of purchasing strike drones of Ukrainian manufacture. It is worth noting that slightly less than a year ago, Ukraine proposed a 'drone deal' to the United States. These actions point to an intensification of Ukraine's defense and technology cooperation with international partners.
This situation underscores the increasing international interest in Ukrainian security technologies, particularly in the context of modern threats posed by Iranian drones. Enhanced cooperation with Middle Eastern and Gulf countries could open new opportunities for Ukraine in exporting defense technologies and strengthening its own security. Simultaneously, the state-level blockage of interceptor drone sales indicates the presence of certain internal political or strategic considerations that require further analysis and clarification.
As Ukraine continues to enhance its counter-drone capabilities, the situation in the Middle East becomes increasingly complex. Recent reports indicate that Ukrainian specialists are actively assisting in defense efforts against Iranian drone threats, highlighting the strategic importance of these collaborations.
