2026 Winter Olympics: Ukraine's Team Struggles Without Medals

According to Главком: Ukraine's national team finished the 2026 Winter Olympics without a single medal. Much of the focus has fallen on skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych, who had a strong chance of winning but was disqualified before he could compete.

Coach Mykola Kushnir, who helped prepare Heraskevych for the Games, said the athlete had excellent medal prospects. He noted that Vladyslav shaved nearly 0.3 seconds off his personal best in the starting push. 'The chances were there, probably to take a medal. Whether gold, silver, or bronze-I can't say. But the chances of a medal were good. He really improved a lot in the starting push,' Kushnir stated.

The coach also highlighted improvements to the sled's design, which enhanced aerodynamics and boosted the athlete's performance. 'The result should have been very high. In all previous practice runs at the Olympics, Vladyslav showed strong results-first, second, third, fifth, and sixth place on the days he was allowed to compete,' Kushnir added.

Disqualification and Aftermath

Despite his preparation, Heraskevych was disqualified by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) before his first skeleton run. The reason was a prohibited image on his helmet, which the IOC and the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF) deemed to violate the Olympic Charter and the Athlete Expression Guidelines. The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Heraskevych's appeal against the IOC in this case.

As a result, Vladyslav Heraskevych's participation in the 2026 Olympics ended before the competition even started, leaving Ukraine's team without any medals.

Ukraine's disappointing performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics underscores the challenging conditions athletes face. Heraskevych's disqualification for a rule violation highlights how strictly enforced sports regulations can dramatically impact an athlete's career.
