Weather in Ukraine: extreme cold from February 1
Україна готується до суворих морозів: з 1 лютого температура опуститься до -30°C

Ukraine Issues Highest-Level Cold Weather Alert

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukraine's State Emergency Service has declared a Level III (red) danger alert due to an extreme cold front expected to grip the country from February 1 to 3. This severe weather system, driven by frigid air masses moving south from northern Europe and reinforced by a high-pressure system, will bring nighttime temperatures down to -20°C to -27°C (-4°F to -17°F) nationwide. In some regions, the mercury is forecast to drop to a critical -30°C (-22°F). Such deep freezes pose significant challenges to a nation still recovering from the impacts of war on its energy infrastructure.

Widespread Disruption to Infrastructure and Daily Life Expected

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center warns that the intense cold will severely strain energy and utility providers and disrupt daily life for citizens. The following oblasts are expected to face the harshest conditions:

  • Rivne
  • Zhytomyr
  • Kyiv
  • Chernihiv
  • Sumy
  • Poltava
  • Kharkiv

Significant disruptions to road, rail, and electrical transport networks are also anticipated. A gradual easing of the freeze is expected by February 4-5. However, for the peak period from the 1st to the 3rd, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution, as only the Zakarpattia region and southern areas will avoid the worst of the cold. Adhering to official safety guidelines is crucial for personal protection during this temperature plunge.

This event underscores the critical need for preparedness against extreme weather, which can severely impact national infrastructure and the daily lives of citizens.

Authorities and emergency services are calling on the public to remain vigilant and follow all safety recommendations, particularly during this period of intense cold. Monitoring weather updates and responding promptly to official advice can help mitigate the risks associated with the severe conditions.
