Drone Strikes Target Two Power Substations in Occupied Crimea Overnight
Drone Attack in Crimea
According to Главком: In the early hours of July 5, unmanned aerial vehicles struck two power substations in the temporarily occupied Crimean Peninsula-one in Bakhchysarai and another in Zymyne. Explosions were reported in the Saksky, Bakhchysarai, and Radiansky districts, with thermal anomalies detected by NASA’s FIRMS satellite monitoring service confirming the incidents. The targeted Bakhchysarai substation operates at 220 kV and is located in the city of Bakhchysarai, while the Zymyne substation, rated at 10/35/10 kV, sits in the Rozdolne district.
According to pre-war data, the Bakhchysarai district was home to over 130,000 residents, whereas the Rozdolne district had a population of roughly 34,000. This attack unfolds amid a fuel crisis on the peninsula that has been ongoing since June. On July 3, Ukrainian forces also hit eight energy facilities, including substations in Tarkhankut, Vypasne, Bilohirsk, Saky, Tavria, Mykolaivka, Staryi Krym, and the Western Crimea region.
Energy Infrastructure Situation
Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert Brovda, confirmed that on July 3, several energy targets were struck, including the Kacha military airfield and a power substation near Staryi Krym. Ivan Plachkov commented:
Now there is no alternative: if fuel is not being sold at gas stations, what can be poured into generators? And even if those generators can be started, they still won't cover the lost generation capacity. - Ivan Plachkov
The energy infrastructure situation in Crimea remains dire. These strikes not only highlight ongoing military operations but also create severe challenges for civilians who rely on stable electricity. Given the persistent fuel shortage across the peninsula, such incidents could significantly disrupt daily life for residents and undermine the region's overall stability. For context, Crimea has faced repeated power and fuel disruptions since the start of the conflict, compounding hardships for local communities.
The recent drone strikes in Crimea are part of a broader pattern of military actions impacting the region's infrastructure. In a related incident, explosions at airfields have led to significant blackouts, further exacerbating the challenges faced by civilians amid ongoing conflicts. Understanding the full scope of these events is crucial for grasping the current situation in occupied Crimea.
