Explosions Rock Crimea's Airfields and Cause Blackouts in Overnight Strike
Strike on Temporarily Occupied Crimea
According to Главком: On the night of July 3, the temporarily occupied Crimean peninsula came under attack, with explosions and gunfire reported across multiple settlements. The most intense activity occurred in the village of Hvardiiske, where air defense systems were likely engaged. A series of blasts also erupted near the Kacha military airfield, while gunfire was heard close to the Saky airfield in Novofedorivka and other areas of the Saky district.
Following the explosions, the town of Staryi Krym and surrounding villages experienced a complete power outage. The blackout may have been caused by a strike on a local electrical substation. Thick black smoke was seen rising above the village of Mar'ianivka in the Krasnohvardiiske district, home to the Mar'ianivka 220/35 kV substation-a facility that had been targeted in previous attacks.
Regional Situation
This attack is not an isolated incident. On June 26, explosions were also reported near Kerch and the ferry crossing. Russian air defense systems were active over occupied Crimea, and the region continues to face power outages, fuel shortages, and logistical disruptions. The occupation authorities have introduced rolling blackouts and reported restrictions on transportation and social services.
Ukraine's defense forces have carried out a series of strikes on Russian military, fuel, and logistics infrastructure, likely contributing to the deteriorating situation. Previous strikes have targeted infrastructure near Kerch, Feodosia, and Sevastopol, and destroyed a bridge over the North Crimean Canal used to supply Russian troops. Russian authorities have acknowledged ongoing fuel and electricity supply problems, and pro-Kremlin propaganda outlets have begun discussing the potential loss of control over supply routes to occupied Crimea.
The escalating military situation in Crimea reflects a surge in Ukrainian operations in response to Russian aggression.
The loss of electricity and mounting logistical challenges could significantly hinder Russia's ability to maintain its military presence on the peninsula. These developments underscore the critical importance of controlling key infrastructure assets, which may prove decisive in the conflict's next phase.
The situation in Crimea remains tense, with a recent wave of explosions linked to a large-scale drone assault further exacerbating the ongoing power and logistical challenges faced by the region. As the Ukrainian defense forces intensify their operations, the impact of these strikes on both military and civilian infrastructure is becoming increasingly evident.
