Ukrainian Drones Strike Record Number of Blows Against Russia’s Oil Backbone

Бездоганна робота українських дронів завдала істотної шкоди російській нафтовій інфраструктурі.

Attacks on Russian Fuel Infrastructure

According to Главком: Ukraine’s long-range drones and cruise missiles have been striking Russia’s fuel infrastructure with increasing intensity, including oil refineries in Tuapse. The strikes, carried out in April and May 2026, caused a major oil spill-the largest along Russia’s coastline in decades. Over 60 kilometers of shoreline were affected. Russian officials and pro-Kremlin bloggers tried to downplay the disaster, but details of the events spread quickly.

Russia’s air defense systems have proven unable to protect all key sites across such a vast territory. Attacks have even reached the Moscow region, damaging refineries and fuel depots. These operations have inflicted heavy losses on oil companies, which are now losing tens of millions of barrels of export capacity.

Growing Public Attention

In April 2026, Ukraine carried out at least 21 strikes on Russia’s oil infrastructure-making it the most active month on record for such attacks. The previous monthly high was in December 2025. Starting April 16, Ukrainian drones hit Russian oil facilities four separate times, triggering massive fires in Tuapse.

Surveys conducted by the state-run polling agency FOM show that the share of Russians citing Ukrainian strikes as the top news story jumped from 2% in February to 18% in May. This rising public awareness signals a shift in attitudes toward domestic policy. By targeting fuel infrastructure, these attacks are eroding the implicit social contract between the Kremlin and the Russian people, which could have serious implications for political stability.

Ukraine’s attacks on Russia’s fuel infrastructure mark a new phase of the conflict, where Ukrainian forces are actively seeking to cripple the enemy’s most vital resources.

Beyond economic damage, these strikes undermine public trust in the government and may reshape Russia’s political landscape. Growing public concern over these events could indicate changing societal moods, which in turn may influence the Kremlin’s future decisions and wartime strategies. The situation remains tense as both sides continue adapting their tactics in response to each other’s moves.

The series of drone strikes on Russian fuel facilities has not only intensified but also expanded geographically, with recent operations reaching targets over 1,500 kilometers away. This escalation highlights the strategic shift in Ukraine's military approach, further evidenced by the second attack on a major Russian oil company. Such developments underscore the growing effectiveness of Ukraine's long-range capabilities and their potential impact on the ongoing conflict.
