Ukraine's Government Readies New Support for Farmers: Insurance, Grants, and Frontline Protection
Meeting with Agricultural Leaders
According to Кабмін: Ukrainian Prime Minister Yuliia Svyrydenko held a working meeting with representatives of the agricultural business. The discussions focused on crucial support measures for farmers, including logistics in frontline regions, compensation for losses due to fortification construction, and European integration changes for the agricultural sector. Special attention was given to farmers operating within 20 kilometers of the active combat line.
During the meeting, Svyrydenko noted that farmers continue production, support communities, and uphold food security despite working under shelling and losing personnel, equipment, and infrastructure. Draft Law No. 14117, concerning support for farmers, has passed its first reading in the relevant parliamentary committee and awaits consideration by the full Parliament.
'Thank you for your resilience and your work,' she emphasized.
Key Support Measures for Farmers
The primary support instruments under discussion include:
- War risk insurance with compensation for damages of up to 30 million UAH;
- Recovery grants of up to 16 million UAH for damaged equipment.
Yuliia Svyrydenko added: 'We are working on key issues: protecting farmers during sowing and harvesting; ensuring unimpeded grain exports; and a program to supply farmers with electronic warfare countermeasures.' A list of territories is also being compiled in the State Agrarian Registry, alongside targeted support programs. The European integration changes for the sector involve environmental requirements, impact assessments, and tax rules.
This meeting underscores the critical importance of supporting the agricultural sector during wartime, particularly given the extreme challenges faced by farmers near the front lines. The agricultural industry is a cornerstone of Ukraine's economy and a key global food supplier. The adoption of the support bill could significantly improve working conditions in the sector, thereby bolstering the country's food security. The introduction of grants and risk insurance are vital steps toward ensuring stability in agricultural production during the ongoing conflict.
