Ukraine's Government Commits 3 Billion Hryvnias for Urgent Road Repairs
Traffic Restrictions in Kyiv
According to Главком: Traffic has been partially restricted on Lukyanivska Square in Kyiv's Shevchenkivskyi District since March 20 due to asphalt paving work. This project is part of a broader national road repair initiative. The Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers has allocated 3 billion hryvnias from the state budget's reserve fund for this purpose, specifically for urgent maintenance on heavily trafficked roads of national importance.
Funding for Road Works
In a separate budgetary move, the government has also distributed 12.6 billion hryvnias, which were earmarked in the state budget for 2026, for the repair and maintenance of public roads. Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko noted that 4.6 billion hryvnias of this sum is designated for ongoing maintenance work.
This new funding follows a period of severely constrained resources. In 2024 and 2025, financing for the road fund was virtually nonexistent, which led to a sharp increase in expenditures for the capital repair of municipal roads. In light of these financial shifts, the State Audit Service of Ukraine is currently conducting an inspection of the municipal corporation 'Kyivavtodor'.
These measures represent a significant government effort to improve Ukraine's road infrastructure after a challenging period of underfunding. The substantial investment aims to enhance road safety and alleviate traffic congestion. However, ensuring the efficient and accountable use of these public funds remains critical, particularly as audits by the State Audit Service are underway.
In addition to the recent allocation for urgent road repairs, the government has established a deadline for significant improvements on key highways. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that essential routes are fully operational by May 1st, which is crucial for enhancing connectivity and economic activity.
