Discovery of a Massive Building in the Cucuteni Culture

According to НВ — Техно: A colossal structure dating back more than 6,000 years has been uncovered by archaeologists in the region of the Cucuteni culture. Covering roughly 350 square meters, the building dates to the 40th–39th centuries BCE, challenging the established chronological framework. Artifacts found inside point to a ritual purpose for this edifice. The research, carried out from 2021 to 2024, was published in the scientific journal PLOS One. This find sheds new light on the sophisticated societies that thrived in Eastern Europe long before many classical civilizations.

Excavations and Findings

Identified as a mega-structure, this building was constructed over 6,000 years ago. Excavations conducted in 2023 and 2024 revealed around 45 residential houses. The structure itself was a timber-and-clay post-frame building, yet no ovens or hearths were found inside it.

  • Archaeologists discovered fragments of painted pottery.
  • Zoomorphic ornaments.
  • A conical clay idol.
  • A vessel featuring a bull's head depiction.

Soil analysis indicated traces of cereals, wild fruits, and henbane-a plant with psychoactive properties. Radiocarbon dating of plant remains beneath the floor confirmed the structure dates to the 40th–39th centuries BCE. Notably, only a quarter of the site has been excavated, leaving ample room for future discoveries and research.

This find represents a major contribution to the study of the ancient Cucuteni culture, renowned for its unique ritual practices and social organization. The artifacts suggesting the building's ritual use could reshape our understanding of the social and cultural life of people from that era. As investigations continue, new data may emerge, further deepening our insight into this early civilization.
